Stopping at Compass Rose is a MUST when shopping in Tacoma. This shop has a little bit of everything. You are sure to find a fun gift for whoever you're shopping for. I especially appreciate that when I shop here, I know that my purchase also supports Tacoma youth and educational programs because Compass Rose consistently gives back to support the community. This shop may not be a big chain, but they support their community in a BIG way, so please support them by choosing Compass Rose when searching for your next gift, or treating yourself to a little retail therapy.

We usually enjoy shopping here, however, I believe their vibe has changed. At least towards me and my family. We were doing last minute Christmas shopping last Sunday, and were being watched so closely. It was very uncomfortable. I was browsing the jewelry area and there was some waspy older lady who was hovering over me to the point that we made eye contact a few times. It was so awkward that she had to say something like, “there’s jewelry everywhere… here, here, here….” Like, yes lady… that’s why I was looking there. At one point, my two 16 year olds were opening two Sonny angels that they had purchased there, and this waspy older lady and a younger version of her, were looking at them and whispering to each other. As if they thought they had stolen them. Why would these kids open the things in store, if they stole them?? I thought I was overreacting until I was in line to pay for all my stocking stuffers. There was an elderly white couple in front of me paying, and the white cashier lady was all smiles for them. When I (a brown person) got to the register to pay, no smile and a dry ass attitude. I felt regret of spending like $150 there. The regret was not because of the amount spent, but more because I gave them my business. It would’ve been much easier to give my money to Amazon for a cheaper price but i was making a conscious decision to support small businesses. It’s hard to keep making these decisions with the type of treatment that I got from here. If you’re a minority, beware. The entire team working there is white. Which is fine! I usually don’t care about how my service providers look. But in this day and age, I encourage others to shop where they are welcome. I’m saddened by this experience because we often have breakfast at Mannys and then shop here. They have a cute selection of things at a variety of price points so we all get a little something to look at. This store was a part of our routine but I feel uncomfortable about it now. If they don’t want my money, why would I use my disposable income in a place like this? It’s not a necessity and we’ve found other great shopping places to patron in Tacoma.
